Are the best CIOs from non-tech backgrounds?
Most Successful CIOs are not pure technologists. As Arun Gupta puts it, successful CIOs are business leaders, and have a deep understanding of the business’ efforts and goals. CIOs should be enamored with technology, to be certain, but it shouldn’t be their single vision. CIOs who are considered the best must be able to combine IT efforts with business goals in such a way as to benefit the overall strategy of the business. Having a limited business awareness can hamper the CIO’s relationship with the overall organization, thereby doing a disservice to IT and the business at once.
