IT Best Practices

IT Projects: there are no such things anymore.

| July 19, 2012

end_featuredWe have to stop thinking of projects performed by IT as “IT projects”!

IT projects are often not about IT at all ““ they are about implementing productivity tools, creating a new business practices, or supporting overall business change. Martin Webster goes on in this post to highlight the importance of IT in enabling business (hence creating the IT/business alignment desired by most companies):

Much business change makes use of the enabling power of information technology. However, few change projects are only about IT. If we are to bridge the business-IT gap IT must be seen as an enabler not instigator of change. Such projects should be business-led. The IT organisation must be committed to  business objectives  and work to close the culture gap between business and IT.

Does this change the way IT does business? Perhaps not, but it does cement a running trend in thinking over the past few years: IT isn’t at odds with the business, it simply needs to recognize how strategic it can be for business objectives and position itself to enable those objectives to be reached.
